청주시는 세계공예협의회(World Crafts Council, WCC)로부터 인정받은 대한민국 유일의 ‘세계공예도시’로, 청주공예비엔날레를 통해 국내외 공예의 우수성을 널리 알리고 있다. 2025 청주공예비엔날레는 14번째 행사로, 올해의 주제는 《세상 짓기》이다.
‘짓다’는 옷을 짓고, 밥을 짓고, 집을 짓는다는 의식주 전체의 창작 행위를 의미한다. 의식주에 바탕을 두고 인류의 삶과 관계 맺는 공예로, 《세상 짓기 Re_Crafting Tomorrow》는 미술-디자인-건축을 아우르고, 인간-자연-사물을 연결하며, 집단의 무의식과 문화를 표현하는 공동체와 함께 고민하는 공예의 새로운 정체성과 가능성을 진단한다. 또한, 자극과 오락을 추구하는 디지털 테크놀로지 시대에 몸의 회복과 물질적 지능을 고양시키는 공예의 본질적인 가치를 찾고자 한다.

Cheongju is the only city in South Korea recognized as a World Craft City by the World Crafts Council (WCC), and has promoted the excellence of Korean and international crafts through the Cheongju Craft Biennale. The 2025 Cheongju Craft Biennale marks its 14th edition, with this year’s theme titled Re_Crafting Tomorrow.
In Korean, the verb jitda (“to make” or “to build”) encompasses a wide range of creative acts essential to everyday life, such as making clothes, cooking meals, and building homes. Grounded in the realm of food, clothing, and shelter—the foundations of human existence—Re_Crafting Tomorrow examines the evolving identity and potential of craft as a practice that engages with human life. The exhibition transcends the boundaries of art, design, and architecture; connects people, nature, and objects; and explores craft as a medium through which communities express collective cultures and shared unconscious values.
Furthermore, in an age increasingly shaped by digital technologies that prioritize stimulation and entertainment, the Biennale seeks to rediscover the essential value of craft through its ability to restore embodied experience and cultivate material intelligence.
