‘강한 자가 살아남는 것이 아니라 살아남는 자가 강하다.’
영국의 철학자 하버트 스펜서는 그가 창안한 ‘적자생존(Survival of the fittest)’에서 종(Species)의 적응과 생존에 대해 이야기한다. 그 옛날, 감히 예측이나 했을까. 지구 역사상 가장 강력했던 공룡들이 한순간에 사라질지. 변화에 적응하지 못하여 도태되어버린 종들의 결말은 우리의 본능에 깊이 새겨져 끊임없이 살아남는 방법에 대해 고민하게 한다. 여기 모인 4인의 작가들도 마찬가지로, 일상의 고민에 대처하며 저마다 살아남기 위해 발버둥 치고 있다. 모아놓고 보면 별것 아닌 생존 고민도 개인에게는 돌덩이보다 무거운 법. 살아남는다는 것은 무엇이며, 어떻게 해야 살아남을 수 있을까? 끊임없이 선택받고 존재의 당위를 인정받기 위한 생존의 굴레 속에서 우리가 가져야 할 삶의 가치에 대한 실마리를 찾아보려고 한다.
본 전시는 연륜 있는 작가가 내놓는 심오한 인생 철학에 관한 것이 아니다. ‘20대 후반에서 30대 초반’, 이제 막 자립하여 생존에 직면한 젊은 작가들이 내던지는 시시콜콜한 이야기이다. 오답 노트는 있지만 정답지는 없는 것이 삶이니 4인의 작가들은 그 나이에 할 수 있는 진솔한 고민과 각자의 생존 방식을 다양한 조형 언어를 통해 제시해보고자 한다.
생존을 위하여. 방식과 전달의 공유를 위하여. 나는 이렇게 살아남고 있다는 생존적 외침을 위하여. 누구도 검증할 수 없고, 누구에게도 검증될 수 없는 4인의 생존법. ‘살아남기 시리즈’ 속으로 당신을 초대한다.

“It is not the strongest that survives, but the one that survives that is strong.”
The British philosopher Herbert Spencer introduced the idea of “survival of the fittest,” discussing adaptation and survival within species. One may wonder whether it could ever have been predicted in ancient times that the most powerful creatures in Earth’s history—the dinosaurs—would one day vanish in an instant. The fate of species that failed to adapt and were left behind is deeply inscribed in our instincts, continually prompting us to reflect on how to survive. The four artists gathered here are no different; they struggle, each in their own way, responding to the concerns of everyday life in an effort to endure. What may seem trivial when viewed collectively can feel as heavy as a boulder to the individual. What does it mean to survive, and how can one continue to do so? Within the cycle of survival—where one must constantly be selected and have one’s existence justified—we seek traces of the values we should hold in life.
This exhibition is not about profound life philosophy delivered by seasoned artists. Rather, it presents the casual yet earnest narratives of young artists in their late twenties to early thirties, who have just begun to stand on their own and now face the reality of survival. Life offers no answer sheet, only correction notes; in this sense, the four artists aim to present their honest concerns and individual modes of survival through diverse sculptural languages.
For survival. For the sharing of methods and communication. For the cry of survival that declares: this is how I stay alive. Four ways of surviving that can neither be verified by others nor proven to anyone. We invite you into this exhibition.
