오늘날 젊은 공예가들의 실험은 그 자신의 경계를 확장하는 전위 예술의 성격을 띠고 있다. 전통과 현대 사이의 경계, 공예와 현대미술 사이의 굳건했던 장벽 또한 조금씩 허물어져 내리고 있다. 한국민족문화대백과사전은 공예를 가리켜 실용적 가치와 미술적 가치를 동시에 가지는 조형예술이라 규정하고 있지만, 바로 이 '실용적 가치'에 크게 비중을 두지 않은 작품들이 현대공예의 역동성을 이끄는 듯하다. 이제 우리는 공예를 규정해 온 기존의 기준과 그 의미에 대해 다시 한번 성찰해 볼 필요가 있다.
전국 최대 규모의 공예 축제 2024 공예주간을 맞아 현대 공예의 경계를 탐험하는 특별 기획 전시 《당신의 쓸모를 굳이 묻지 않겠습니다》를 한국의 기품을 간직한 아름다운 전통 한옥 무계원에서 펼쳐보인다. 전통적인 관념에 도전하지만 그럼에도 여전히 아름다운 작품들을 선보이는 이번 전시를 통해 공예의 새로운 경향과 변화를 느끼고 공예를 규정하는 기준들에 대해 함께 담론하였다. 더 나아가 쓰임에 대한 기준을 스스로 만들어가는 젊은 공예가들의 치열한 태도를 통해, 오직 쓸모의 기준으로 존재 가치를 평가받는 현대사회 속 우리의 삶에 작은 철학적 울림을 전하고자 한다.
The experiments of today’s young craft artists embody an avant-garde spirit that expands the boundaries of their own practice. The boundaries between tradition and modernity, as well as the long-standing divide between craft and contemporary art, are gradually dissolving. While the Encyclopedia of Korean Culture defines craft as a formative art that holds both practical and artistic values, it is perhaps the works that move beyond the emphasis on “practical value” that drive the dynamism of contemporary craft. This invites us to reconsider the established criteria by which craft has been defined and understood.
As part of Craft Week 2024, Korea’s largest craft festival, the special exhibition You Don’t Have To Be Useful All The Time explores the evolving boundaries of contemporary craft at Mugeiwon, a traditional Korean hanok embodying the elegance of Korean heritage. Presenting works that challenge conventional notions while maintaining their aesthetic significance, the exhibition examines new directions in craft and reflects on the criteria that define it. Furthermore, through the determined attitudes of young craft artists who create their own definitions of use, the exhibition seeks to offer a philosophical resonance within a contemporary society where value is often measured solely by usefulness.
