기념비는 특정 인물이나 역사적 사건을 기리며 오랜 기간 축적된 시간성을 환기시킨다. 흥미롭게도 자연과 인간의 개입에 의해 마모된 기념비는 시간의 흐름 속에서 원래의 의미와는 다른 새로운 의미를 획득하기도 한다. 〈기념비(Monument)〉 시리즈는 이처럼 사물이 지닌 사소한 흔적과 그에 얽힌 이야기들에 주목하며, 오랜 시간에 걸쳐 새롭게 형성되는 관념을 조명한다.

금속 중에서도 검은 철(열연강판)은 피막이 두꺼워 표면이 은백색으로 드러나기까지 오랜 시간이 소요된다. 작품은 칠흑 같은 표면을 인위적으로 산(酸) 세척하여 물체의 마모된 자리를 마치 수백 년의 시간이 그려낸 회화처럼 드러내고, 빛나는 표면으로 마감함으로써 응축된 시간을 밝힌다.

Monuments commemorate specific individuals or historical events and evoke accumulated time. Interestingly, when worn down by nature and human intervention, they may acquire new meanings different from their original intent over time. The Monument series focuses on these subtle traces embedded in objects and the stories attached to them, highlighting notions that emerge and are reshaped over extended periods of time.

Among metals, hot-rolled steel possesses a thick surface layer, requiring a considerable amount of time before its silvery tone is revealed. In this work, the pitch-black surface is artificially acid-washed, exposing worn areas of the object like paintings rendered by hundreds of years of time, and finished with a luminous surface that illuminates the condensed temporality embedded within it.
