〈Passage Observer〉는 기획전시 《Through the Passage》의 일환으로 설치된 작품으로, 신당중앙시장 지하에 위치한 ‘신당창작아케이드 레지던시’의 장소성과 공간 구조를 모티브로 한다. 레지던시는 긴 복도를 중심으로 구성되어 있으며, 그 양옆으로 입주 작가들의 작업실이 자리하고 있다. 처음 방문한 사람들은 통로처럼 끝없이 이어지는 복도에서 종종 길을 헤매며, 그 과정에서 자연스럽게 작업 중인 작가들의 모습을 마주하게 된다.
작품은 이러한 장소적 경험을 반영한다. 거울로 된 작품의 후면은 관람자로 하여금 통로 속에 갇힌 자신의 모습을 직면하게 한다. 반면, 전면의 작은 구멍은 하나의 소실점을 향해 이어지며 조리개처럼 시야를 제한한다. 〈Passage Observer〉를 벗어나는 순간, 제한되어 있던 시야는 영화의 오프닝 시퀀스처럼 거대한 스크린으로 확장되며 3D 알고리즘에 기반한 작품들이 펼쳐진다. 단계적으로 설계된 감상 과정은 관람자의 시선과 공간에서의 경험을 연결하며, 긴 복도에서 우연히 마주했던 ‘익숙한 생동감’을 다시 떠올리게 한다.
Passage Observer is an installation presented as part of the exhibition Through the Passage, inspired by the spatial character and structure of the Sindang Creative Arcade Residency beneath Sindang Jungang Market. The residency is organized around a long corridor, with artists’ studios lining both sides. First-time visitors often lose their way in the seemingly endless passage, naturally encountering artists at work along the way.
Reflecting this experience, the work presents viewers with their own reflection in its mirrored rear, as if enclosed within the passage. In contrast, a small opening at the front leads toward a single vanishing point, narrowing the field of vision like an aperture. Upon stepping out of Passage Observer, the restricted view expands into a large screen, like the opening sequence of a film, where works based on 3D algorithms unfold. Through this carefully staged viewing process, the work connects the viewer’s gaze with their experience of the space, evoking the familiar sense of vitality encountered in the long corridor.
