〈백 번 찍어 안 넘어가는 나무도 있다(Hundred Strokes)〉는 〈흔적(Vestige)〉 시리즈에서 출발한 작업으로, 작가는 고향 뒷산에 위치한 나무를 도끼로 백 번 내리치며 반복된 행위와 그 과정 자체를 작업의 일부로 포함시킨다.
‘열 번 찍어 안 넘어가는 나무는 없다’는 통념과 달리, 백 번을 찍어도 넘어가지 않는 나무 역시 존재할 수 있다. 그러나 결과의 여부를 떠나서, 흔적이 남아 있는 모든 자리에는 언제나 ‘과정’이 짙게 스며 있음을 작가는 믿는다.
Hundred Strokes is a work derived from the Vestige series, in which the artist strikes a tree located in the hills behind their hometown one hundred times with an axe, incorporating the repetitive act and its process as an integral part of the work.
Contrary to the common saying that “little strokes fell great oaks,” there may indeed be trees that do not fall even after a hundred strikes. However, regardless of the outcome, the artist believes that wherever traces remain, the process is always deeply embedded and lingers beneath the surface.
