〈Hundred Strokes〉는 〈Vestige〉 시리즈에서 출발한 작업으로, 작가는 고향 뒷산의 나무를 도끼로 백 번 내리치는 반복적 행위를 수행하고, 그 과정에서 축적된 시간과 흔적을 작업의 일부로 포함시킨다.
‘열 번 찍어 안 넘어가는 나무는 없다’는 통념과 달리, 어떤 나무는 백 번을 찍어도 넘어가지 않는다. 그러나 결과와 무관하게, 흔적이 남아 있는 모든 자리에는 언제나 과정이 짙게 스며 있음을 작가는 믿는다.
Hundred Strokes is a work derived from the Vestige series, in which the artist strikes a tree located in the hills behind their hometown one hundred times with an axe, incorporating the repetitive act and its process as an integral part of the work.
Contrary to the common saying that “little strokes fell great oaks,” there may indeed be trees that do not fall even after a hundred strikes. However, regardless of the outcome, the artist believes that wherever traces remain, the process is always deeply embedded and lingers beneath the surface.
